Indian American violinist, violist, and composer Sathvi Ramaseshan is a New York–based musician whose work bridges Western classical music and South Indian Carnatic traditions. Raised in a family of music lovers, her earliest musical influences included Carnatic music and Tamil film songs, alongside early and rigorous training in Western classical violin. As both a performer and composer, Ramaseshan is drawn to cross-cultural and cross-genre exploration, with a particular interest in contemporary music and collaboration. Her work seeks to create dialogue between Indian and Western musical languages, informed by both improvisatory practices and notated traditions. She has collaborated with emerging composers and artists across disciplines, including BMI Award–winning composer Arjan Singh Dogra, and is an active participant in new-music communities. Ramaseshan has performed extensively throughout the New York City area at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Klavierhaus NYC, and has been featured as a soloist on WQXR. She has appeared as Assistant Concertmaster with the Mannes Orchestra, performed with ensembles such as the Chelsea Symphony and String Orchestra of Brooklyn, and participated in festivals including String Insiders OSSI, Virtuoso & Belcanto, and Mostly Modern Festival. She is a co-founder of Duo Indigo, a violin/cello duo centered on contemporary music and improvisation. In addition to her performance and compositional work, Ramaseshan is an active educator. She currently serves as a violin and viola faculty member at Yamaha Music Conservatory in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, and D Z Strad Violin Shop in White Plains, New York, where she teaches students of diverse ages and backgrounds, emphasizing technical foundation, musicianship, and creative engagement with music. Ramaseshan holds a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the Mannes School of Music, where she studied violin with Austin Wulliman and Stefan Jackiw, and took composition lessons with Joan La Barbara. She is currently based in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she continues to perform, compose, and teach.
